The theme set by Stress Management Society for Stress Awareness Month 2022 is Community. They mention on their website that; “We have chosen this theme because lack of support can cause loneliness and isolation, which in turn lowers people’s wellbeing, impacts mental health and can lead to mental illness”.
Due to the global pandemic the last two years were among the most challenging faced in recent history, pushing a lot of people through tough times, and loneliness, meaning it’s now more important than ever to notice signs of stress and mental ill health.
Stress can impact us in all kinds of different ways whether it be at home, at work or even your general lifestyle, but it’s not all bad news! There are many great ways to deal with stress, including a technique called 'Box Breathing'.
Check out this video below from Sunnybrook Hospital on how to calm feelings of stress and anxiety with this technique.
As well as breathing exercises, the NHS has its own top 10 tips for dealing with stress including being active to help reduce some of the emotional intensity that you're feeling, and connecting with people in order to build a good support network of friends, family and colleagues to help ease your work troubles and help you see things in a different way. If you wish to, you can read more on these tips here.
This Stress Awareness Month, take the time to look after yourself. Take the required steps to help yourself chill a little, should you need it. Alternatively, spend a little time looking out for your friends and family. You never know what someone might be going through, so you being there for them may be doing them more good than you think.
