Here’s our 5 favourite tips for better mental health.
Mental health is something that can overcome anyone no matter your age or gender. It also comes in many different formats too! So deciphering what will work for you can be difficult.
We’ve curated a list of our top 5 tips that help us when we’re feeling a little low.
1. Treat yourself to great sleep!
A quality slumber can make a huge difference to how we feel both physically and mentally, so it's important to get enough*.
Check out this video from Every Mind Matters to learn more on why sleep is important.
2. Keeping active!
It is believed that performing exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good and that exercising regularly can boost your self-esteem, help you concentrate, sleep and even feel better. Exercise also keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy.**
3. Talk to someone, anyone…
Although this can be extremely hard, finding the courage to talk to someone about how you feel will really lift a weight from your chest. Speaking from experience here, when I was first able to open up, I instantly felt better.
Talking to a friendly face, a real life, in-person social interaction with someone who cares (you really don’t realise how many people care about you) is one of the most effective ways to calm your nervous system and relieve stress.
If you can’t find someone you know, or feel like you want to talk to a stranger, there are some great resources out there for this. Mind Charity have a number of helplines you can call: https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/helplines/
4. Find purpose and meaning
This will be completely different for everyone and there’s an unlimited number of ways this could go, but why not try one of these?
Volunteer with someone or something that makes you feel useful
Invest your time and efforts into relationships and quality time with people who matter the most to you
Look out for others. Being their for your mate, who truly might be feeling pretty low too can feel extremely rewarding
Take up a sport like football, basketball, tennis or something a little more different like curling
Start a club. Finding like-minded people can be an awesome thing
Go hiking. Fresh air in your lungs can really take the edge off
